The Best Parenting Advice

January was a very busy month and I don’t expect things to slow down in the following months. What have we been up to? Work. Lots of it.

I won’t lie. We are having a difficult time catching up with our financial needs (now that we have two little ones). To be able to provide for our family of four, Daddy A and I are forced to work harder for extra income. I took on more projects in my online job while Daddy A entered a business partnership – and you know how it is when a business is just starting out.

We have been so busy with client calls, meetings, all those work-related stuff, that we lost precious time with our kids. And a month is a whole lot of time lost: Kelly can now sing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star; Caleb is already turning to his side. All these happened and we didn’t even take the time to treasure the moment.

The other day, The Princess kept trying to get my attention while I was working. I told her to wait and she cried. I got angry… only to realize that she just wanted to present her newly learned song, with actions. Why didn’t I just stop working and watch her sing and dance?!

Then I read Happy Families Blog’s article The Best Parenting Advice That We Rarely Ever Follow. His grandmother’s advice – “Enjoy them. They’re so beautiful, and they grow up so fast. Just enjoy them.” – is probably something we’ve all heard. Slow down, find time for the kids, enjoy the moment. It’s so simple, yet extremely hard to follow.

There is just so much going on in our lives and truly savoring our moments with the kids is only possible when we really pay attention; when we drop everything else and just be with them.

I don’t want to miss anything anymore. It’s just so sad to be there but not really be there.

Which is why starting today, I promise to spend more time with the kids – and hopefully Daddy A will be able to do the same. I know we need to work, but work has to have limitations too.
