Being a fireman’s family is a challenge. We may not show it on this blog or in our Instagram feed, but it is. People often wonder how we’re making our family life “blissful.” Folks, that’s called selective sharing. I don’t like washing dirty laundry in public, which is why you don’t see much of the nasty part of being a fireman’s family. So let me tell you that being married to a fireman isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. We go through challenging times, we just don’t share ’em…unless we think sharing our problem can benefit others. Most of the time, we zip it.
But for the sake of this post, let me share with you one problem we often encounter in our family–and that’s time my husband gives to the service. The thing with being in service is that we, the family, have to accept that it often comes before us. Even if we want our Daddy A to be part of all the momentous events in our family life, he can’t always be there for us.
Take, for instance, The Princess’ moving up day. She badly wanted her dad to be there on her special day, but because of the call of duty, he didn’t make it. And so she ended up in the backstage…crying the whole time.
Thank goodness I was there for her during her first heartbreak. I totally understand why Daddy A couldn’t be there (though I am extremely grateful that he tries his very best to give us his time), but I’m really glad that I made it. This is why my husband and I decided that I will work from home when we started a family. Since he can’t be there all the time, at least I can be around for the minis.

Formerly known as oDesk, Upwork is one of the most popular platforms for finding freelance work. This is where my freelance career started back in 2008 and my first clients there are still my clients now. There are thousands of home based job opportunities listed here, but be extra choosy with who you work with so you went get scammed into working for free.
OnlineJobs
Last year, I decided to search the web for other websites that has home based job opportunities for Filipinos. One website that I’ve tried and successfully found a client from is home based jobs. They’ve got lots of openings for virtual assistants, web developers, and many others!
Craigslist
Not a lot of people go to Craigslist to find a home based job, but this website offers a heap of opportunities. To find a job, go to a local Craigslist page (i.e. Craigslist New York) then choose either ‘Jobs’ or ‘Gigs.’ You’re going to see a long list of job opportunities so just browse through that list until you find one that offers home based work setup.
Virtual Staff Finder
If you can’t find a job opening yourself, why not get the help of a recruiter? Virtual Staff Finder has home based job openings that suit every skill set. Just sign up and apply to their job listings! Their recruitment specialists will then pair you with potential clients.
Virtual Coworker
This is a new one for me, but you can definitely rely on this recruitment website to find a suitable home based job for you. Just head on over to their Job Openings page and apply!
You read that right. Since COVID-19, I’ve seen a surge of job posts on Facebook looking for remote workers. If you go to the site’s Jobs page and use the search bar to look for openings for Virtual Assistants or whatever your skill offer is, you’ll find a ton of listings both in the Philippines and abroad.
Note: All these websites do not charge for basic accounts. You can apply to jobs for free and get hired! However, if you want to get “seen” more by clients, you can avail of their paid plans. I don’t recommend upgrading your plan, though, because you don’t really need to upgrade to get hired. But let’s leave that for another blog post. 😉
